Can Canvas Detect AI?

Canvas by itself does not have a built-in AI detector. But that does not mean AI use is invisible — Canvas is usually connected to tools like Turnitin that do flag AI, plus it quietly logs more than most students realize.

The short answer

Canvas LMS is a learning platform, not a detection tool. Out of the box it will not scan your essay and return an "AI score." However, most institutions pair Canvas with Turnitin or a similar integration, and Turnitin's AI writing indicator runs automatically when you submit through a Canvas assignment that has it enabled.

What Canvas can and cannot see

  • Native AI detection: none built into Canvas itself.
  • Through Turnitin/Copyleaks integration: yes — an AI likelihood score is generated on submission and shown to your instructor.
  • Activity data: Canvas logs submission timestamps, access logs, and (in quizzes) tab-focus and timing. This is not AI detection, but it is context an instructor can use.

What your professor actually sees

If Turnitin is enabled, your instructor sees a similarity report and an AI-writing percentage next to your submission. That number behaves like any detector score — it is an estimate, not proof, and it can be wrong. Reputable instructors treat it as a reason to look closer, not as an automatic verdict. (For why that matters, see why no detector is 100% accurate.)

Does Canvas detect ChatGPT specifically?

Not directly — but the Turnitin layer is tuned to flag output from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar models. Raw, unedited model text is the easiest thing for it to catch. Heavily edited or original writing is much harder to flag. If Turnitin is the gatekeeper in your Canvas course, the closest tool you can self-check with is covered in which AI detector is closest to Turnitin.

How to protect yourself before you submit

  • Check your course's AI policy — some allow assisted use with disclosure.
  • Keep drafts and version history. If you are questioned, that is your strongest evidence.
  • Self-check your work first so a flag never surprises you. Our free AI detector shows which sentences read as machine-generated.
  • If you used AI for help, revise substantively in your own voice and add specific detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can Canvas detect AI without Turnitin?

No. Without an integrated detection tool, Canvas has no native way to score text for AI.

Can Canvas tell if I copy-pasted?

Canvas does not reliably track clipboard actions, but quiz logs can record timing and tab-switching, which some instructors review.

Will Canvas flag me automatically?

Canvas itself will not. If Turnitin or Copyleaks is enabled, a score is generated automatically, but a human decides what to do with it.
