Can Brightspace (D2L) Detect AI?

Brightspace by D2L does not have a built-in AI detector. But like other learning platforms, it is usually connected to tools — Turnitin or Copyleaks — that do flag AI writing, and it quietly logs more than most students realize.

The short answer

Brightspace is a learning management system, not a detection tool. On its own it will not scan an assignment and return an "AI score." However, most institutions pair Brightspace with Turnitin or Copyleaks, and those integrations run an AI-writing check automatically when you submit to an assignment that has them enabled.

What Brightspace can and cannot see

  • Native AI detection: none built into Brightspace itself.
  • Through Turnitin/Copyleaks: yes — an AI likelihood score is generated on submission and shown to your instructor.
  • Activity data: Brightspace logs submission times, access logs, and quiz timing — context an instructor can review, though it is not AI detection.

Does Brightspace detect ChatGPT?

Not directly — but the Turnitin or Copyleaks layer is tuned to flag output from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and similar models. Raw, unedited model text is the easiest thing to catch; heavily revised or original writing is much harder. The closest tool you can self-check with is covered in which AI detector is closest to Turnitin. (Canvas works the same way — see can Canvas detect AI.)

How to protect yourself before you submit

  • Check your course's AI policy — rules vary by instructor, not just by school.
  • Keep drafts and version history; that timeline is your strongest evidence if questioned.
  • If you used AI for help, rewrite it in your own voice and add specific detail.
  • Self-check first. Our free AI detector shows which sentences read as machine-generated.

Frequently asked questions

Can Brightspace detect AI without Turnitin?

No. Without an integrated detection tool, Brightspace has no native way to score text for AI.

Does D2L flag ChatGPT automatically?

Only if Turnitin or Copyleaks is enabled on the assignment. Then a score is generated on submission, but a human decides what it means.

Can my instructor see when I submitted?

Yes — Brightspace logs submission timestamps and access activity, which some instructors review alongside an AI score.
