Can Moodle Detect AI?

Moodle does not have a built-in AI detector. But Moodle is open-source and plugin-driven, and many institutions add a plagiarism plugin — Turnitin or Copyleaks — that does flag AI writing on submission.

The short answer

Out of the box, Moodle is a learning platform, not a detection tool — it will not scan your assignment and return an "AI score." What changes the picture is the plagiarism plugins schools install. When Turnitin or Copyleaks is enabled on an assignment, it runs an AI-writing check automatically as you submit, and the result goes to your instructor.

What Moodle can and cannot see

Native AI detection: none built into core Moodle.
Through plagiarism plugins (Turnitin/Copyleaks): yes — an AI likelihood score is generated on submission when enabled.
Activity logs: Moodle records detailed logs — submission times, access, and quiz timing — which instructors can review as context.

Does Moodle detect ChatGPT?

Not on its own. If a plagiarism plugin is active, it is tuned to flag output from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and similar models — easiest on raw, unedited text and much harder on substantially rewritten work. How to protect yourself before you submit

Check your course's AI policy — it varies by instructor.
Keep drafts and version history as evidence you did the work.
If you used AI for help, rewrite it in your own voice and add specific detail.
